On May 8, the “Technical Specifications on Cyanide Slag Pollution Control in the Gold Industry” (Revision) (referred to as “Specifications”) project kick-off meeting was successfully held in Xiamen by Fujian Zijin Engineering Technology. Representatives from China Gold Association, China Academy of Environmental Sciences, Changchun Gold Research Institute Co., Ltd. and more than 20 enterprises including China Gold, Zijin Mining, Shandong Gold, Zhaojin group, Yunnan Gold and Yintai Gold attended the meeting. Li Zhehao, member of the project team, assistant to the General Manager of CCGRI, attended the meeting.
The “Specifications” have been published for nearly three years, and have provided important technical basis for the compliance management of cyanide residues in the gold industry. However, there are still some key problems need to be solved urgently. In order to tackle the problems like cyanide tailings backfill, tailings pond(stockpile) closure, utilization(brick and sand preparation) in gold industry, China Gold Association, Chinese Academy of Environmental Sciences and Changchun Gold Research Institute Co., Ltd. joint hands to undertake the revising task.
The kick-off meeting mainly introduced the latest development trends of hazardous waste management policies, the status-quo of the “Specifications” revision project, the funding allocation plan, and focused on the details of the sampling tasks on gold heap leaching process. The Chinese Academy of Environmental Sciences took the Cyanide Residue from Heap Leaching of Zijinshan gold and Copper Mine as an example, specifically introduced the sample-collecting scheme of cyanide residue. Experts on-site communicated with representatives from various related enterprises in terms of this project. Based on the characteristics of heap leaching process and the current situation of heap leaching slag, they formulated a sampling policy of “one enterprise, one method”, and selected some enterprises with typical regional, climate and time to proceed. Members from CCGRI and Academy of Environmental Sciences were divided into two groups during the sampling process, the suggestions on plan-formulating given by our team were fully recognized.
The “Specifications” revision intends to conduct a refined investigation and research on the cyanide tailings of the gold industry. By scientifically evaluating the cyanide residue produced by heap leaching and all-slime cyanidation process as well as the utilization, hazard characteristics and environmental risk of cyanide residue in gold concentrate, the cyanide tailings are better classified and controlled. Meanwhile, it provides technical support for the revision of the “National Hazardous Waste List”, and it is of great significance to the scientific control of cyanide residue in the gold industry.
